Where I am right now
I'm not sure who this poem is about. There's a couple of front-runners.
In a situation I thought
improbable
(because I've learned 'impossible' is a laughable word)
I've fought so hard lately to be
practical.
Lock it all away,
Tell no one of pain, of joy.
Then, He surprised me.
Could be a faith issue. It's altered in the last few months. Went through some rocky stuff that surprised me--by both the suddenness and how deeply my heart was affected. I know my faith, which has been pretty strong for a long while now, deepened.
Could be about The Man. We've wandered back to each other again. It's so much nicer this time--we smile more, touch more, and are more at ease with each other. I thought I was happy and at peace with him before, but I don't think I really knew what that felt like. I do now.

Perhaps it is about yourself?

The not being sure what its about though opens it up to interpretation and multiple meanings, which is I think a good thing....

Brian--pretty sure it's not about me. The first line I wrote was "He surprised me." The first line I write is the only one I'm ever sure of, and that line in particular wouldn't change at all. Definitely a male persona in there.
Green poet--oh definitely! That's why I like this group, lots of things to think about!

Such a nice poem to share a few days before the New Year. I was plesantly surprised by your last line, too.

The last couple of years of my life seem to have been about learning to expect people to surprise me in good ways--to surprise me at how well they take unwanted news, to surprise me at how strong they can be, to surprise me at how forgiving they can be. Your poem sums all of this up and is a great reminder for me not to forget those lessons. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Happy New Year!
